HDR – High Dynamic Range increases the range between the darkest parts of the screen to the lightest producing more detail on your display. HDR improves the contrast dramatically to produce an even more realistic and immersive scene. At the time of writing this technology is still relatively new, with TV’s emerging with different variations of HDR within the last few years.
What are the benefits of HDR?
The difference in detail from the darkest parts of your image to the brightest will greatly increase, whether you are gaming or watching any HDR content such as a movie. This allows for a much greater, more immersive and realistic picture with more colours. It’s worth noting that HDR is complimented with a display that is able to show brighter, which will make the highlights in HDR scenes really pop. This brightness of a screen is often measured in nits and a TV with higher nits will produce a brighter picture.
TV’s with OLED panels will show more of the detail in dark scenes and can currently reach around 750 nits depending on the manufacturer. Samsung’s current Q90T QLED panel which uses LED technology can reach a staggering 2000 nits but may clip some of the detail in the dark scenes.
The Samsung Q90T can reach an impressive 2000 nits peak brightness in HDR mode. Find out more…
