eARC stands for Enhanced Audio Return Channel. This is one of the new features implemented in the new HDMI 2.1 specification, allowing you to take advantage of the latest high definition audio. Previous HDMI 2.0 was only able to send ‘audio return channel’ data to your speakers. With ‘Enhanced Audio Return Channel’ the data is now capable of being sent both ways. This allows easier connectivity and control of your external devices. You would also need less remote controls as you would be able to control your devices through a single remote.

Worth noting that HDMI 2.1 is backwards compatible and will work with your existing speaker system if it does not have eARC capability.
What will you need to take advantage of eARC?
For you to benefit from eARC’s features you’ll need to make sure you have an HDMI 2.1 ready device, such as TV with the full HDMI 2.1 features, an HDMI 2.1 cable (preferably Ultra Certified), if you have an external sound bar or Audio Video Receiver (AVR) system with speakers it will need to have an HDMI 2.1 socket as one of it’s connections.
In a case where you had a PS5, an HDMI 2.1 ready TV and an AVR system connecting your speakers, you would need 2 x HDMI 2.1 cables. One to connect your PS5 to your TV and the other to connect your TV to your sound bar or AVR system via the HDMI 2.1 ports.
Conclusion
As with HDMI 2.1, eARC is not an essential requirement and will benefit those wanting to take advantage of the full features HDMI 2.1 has to offer.
