ALLM stands for Auto Low Latency Mode. This mode automatically switches your HDMI 2.1 ready TV to the best setting for fast responsive gaming. ALLM will switch off picture processing your TV doesn’t need to use while your next generation console is being used. This is one of the many features incorporated into the new HDMI 2.1 specification. There are TV’s that have had a game mode which performs a similar job to ALLM, reducing the input lag and setting the TV to it’s fastest response time.
What are the benefits of ALLM?
If you’re not gaming but watching a movie or series your TV may be doing a lot of extra processing. The processing it does is purely to give you the best picture possible to compliment the material you are viewing. Things such as image sharpening, detail enhancing and dynamic contrast adjusting take a few more milliseconds for a TV to process. These milliseconds are not noticeable during normal viewing will effect the time you see the image on screen while gaming. ALLM switching your TV to it’s lowest input lag is a valuable to be aware of if you are a gamer.
The new HDMI 2.1 ready gaming consoles are now able to automatically tell an HDMI 2.1 ready TV when it is game mode. Extra processing is automatically disabled when ALLM game mode is enabled. This results in a quicker response time and the lowest input lag time during game play.
The new PS5 and XBox Series consoles now have the capability to tell a next generation TV to switch off the extra processing via the HDMI 2.1 port. This mode greatly reduces the input lag time which will enable you to see the image on screen earlier.
